IEEE International Conference on Data Engineering (ICDE) 2022

9th – 12th May 2022

The IEEE International Conference on Data Engineering (ICDE) is a premier forum for the exchange and dissemination of data management research results among researchers, practitioners, developers, educators and users. Continuing this long-standing tradition, the 38th ICDE was to be hosted this year in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from May 9 to May 12, 2022. However, just like ICDE 2020 and ICDE 2021, due to the global uncertainties, travel restrictions, and other difficulties associated with Covid-19, ICDE 2022 will be hosted virtually, for the third time. All the events will be held online from May 9 to May 12, from 8AM to midnight MalaysiaTime (MYT). We welcome everyone to the virtual meeting of ICDE 2022.

Despite the challenging times, the number of submissions to ICDE 2022 was healthy as ever. The Research Track received a total of 780 submissions (up from 549 in 2021)  (366 in the first round, and 414 in the second round). A total of 119 papers were submitted to the industry track and 46 to the demonstrations track.

We accepted in total 211 research papers, 34 industry papers, 16 demonstration proposals, 7 tutorials, 5 PhD Symposium presentations, and 49 TKDE posters.

Each research paper was assigned to three program committee members and one associate chair who managed the review/discussion process. We introduced several new elements in the review process including review quality week where reviews were “reviewed” with respect to specific quality criteria and were subsequently improved before given to the authors for feedback, and inviting a 4th reviewer when there was a need. In addition, we introduced a shepherding phase for all revision papers where authors were able to ask clarification questions to reviewers with respect to revision requests. Furthermore, in order to reduce reviewing load and to speedup author notifications, we introduced early reject and early accept decisions for papers where we had high confidence that the final decisions would not change.

The program includes two keynotes, one with a technical theme from Beng Chin Ooi from National University of Singapore, and the other with a diversity and inclusion theme from Bhavani Thuraisingham from University of Texas at Dallas. The program also includes two additional diversity and inclusion events: a workshop on resume writing and a panel discussion on career advice for underrepresented groups.

We hope that you enjoy IEEE ICDE 2022!
